Ethiopia - Geography & Environment

Ploughing above canyons
In the Wollo region of Ethiopia there are high plateaus and canyons

Ethiopia is bordered by Sudan to the west, Somalia and Djibouti to the east, Eritrea to the north, and Kenya to the south.

It’s the most mountainous country in Africa: almost three-quarters of Ethiopia is higher than Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain. The most sensational geographical feature of Ethiopia is the East African Rift Valley, which runs from north to south, dividing the country into the western highlands, the eastern highlands, and the Rift Valley lowlands.

Fertile soil in the lowlands means that wheat can be grown

Ethiopia has huge variations in its climate -- from the hot, tropical Kolla valleys to the cool, rainy Dega highlands where grain is grown and cattle graze. The Ogaden semi-desert plain is dry and bare, and the low-lying Danakil Depression is one of the hottest, driest places on earth.
